Day 7 Did the Earth move for you too?

Posted in News at 10:53 pm by Mags

Taupo – another lovely seasidey feeling place – but on the shores of a lake (a volcanic one!!! icon-doh-uhg )
We didn’t spend much time looking round actually as it was raining so much,
The weather in NZ has been very wet these last few days with reports on the news about landslips and houses nearly falling down holes – but not in Auckland I hasten to add icon-whew
Taupo

Anyway back to our trip along the Thermal Explorer Highway (or Super Highway 1 as I’ve christened it! icon-lol)
First stop the Huka Falls
The Falls

A very fast flowing gorge with a spectacualar falls at the end of it – and people go in jet boats up to it and do all sorts of mad things like 360 turns in it and other generally “I’m not doing THAT Murray!” type things … icon-lol

From there it was a short hop to the Volcanic Activity Centre – yes was in my element ! Lots of words like “tectonic” and “subduction zones” being banded about (yes I know I’m a sad geographer! icon-blushing ) Its one of those interactive places so there were lots of things to play with – and the beauty of this trip is everyone else is at work so you get to go on things loads …. icon_thumbsup
Where I’d like a job!
Having survived a 6 on the Reichter scale – in a simulation I might add :icon-doh it was off to some more hot spots at The Craters of the Moon – this is a realtively new thermal area which came about because of the local power station – and is still forming !
The rain came down which really steamed the place up – good for my chest though – after all those years of being held over steam to clear it as a child I just got to walk through it !

(will get back to you with link for that! I have got pics but my blog won’t take em!!)

From here we went to visit New Zealand Wood craft
Wood
where we saw a lathe demo much like Dad does – infact the business was up for sale … I could work the till Dad! icon-hee-hee
The native wood the Kauri was what the Maoris used to build their canoes – massive trees!
From here we wound our way back over the mountains along superhighway 1 and some pretty dire rain storms back to Auckland

Day6 Taupo or bust!!!

Posted in News at 7:02 am by Mags

Sun decided to make an appearance icon_suncloud as we hit the road bound for Taupo via some more sites of geo thermal interest for Miss Intrepid Geog/Geologist here! icon-lol

First stop the Wai -O- Tapu thermal wonderland – complete with perfoming geyser (10.15a.m. daily!!!! icon-evil2 ) here you actually get to walk over some real life unstable ground!!!!
The colours are amazing – and so is the steam!
Wai-O-Tapu

From here we headed to Okarei Korako which you have to get to by boat – its called the Hidden Valley and because we were practically the only visitors there it was very spooky walking along the bush trail … well I was spooked icon-nailbite
The most creepy bit for me was the Ruatapu Cave – looks lovely on the pictures but there was something about it … I didn’t go all the way to the bottom like my intrepid Kiwi – the memorial sign saying the spirit of a local Maori boy who had been killed in WW2 ‘hovered’ in the cave didn’t help my nerves much either … icon-raisedbrow
Murray being the intrepid explorer that he is went all the way down to the pool at the bottom … and then wished he hadn’t after the very steep climb back up icon_eek
The Hidden Valley

From here we drove down to Taupo through the rain which had decided to follow us from Rotorua …
more lovely accomodation (didn’t I tell you I was with THE Premiere Tour Guide of NZ icon-lovestruck ) and dining at NZ’s No1 Pizza Place for 2006 The Volcanic Kitchen – stone baked on wood fires – the waya Mama lika s to make it icon-hungry

And after all that we decided to have a quiet night in before making our way back up The Thermal Explorers Highway (not making it up icon_biggrin) to Auckland via one or two other spots …
To be continued … icon-type

Day 5 Here comes the rain again …

Posted in News at 12:58 am by Mags

Woke to a very rain soaked Rotorua – it was chucking it down a la home icon-angry020
M’s car has a leak on the passenger side icon-rolleyes so we didn’t venture far in it ….

We went to the Rotorua Museum and had a great tour of the place first with a very lovely lady guide who was very interesting to listen to and then by ourselves to look at somethings again … it houses Maori and European historical displays
The building the museum is in has a very interesting history – it was built as a spa bath house in the 18oo’s to a German design known as The Great South Seas Spa for people to come to be cured of rhuematic and arthritic conditions … its also been a night club !! The building design earned it the name Tudor Towers.
Rotorua Museum
Next to this was a building called the Blue Baths which used to be the local swimming pool but is now a museum and suave restaurant too (we didn’t eat there … couldn’t even persuade M to give me a twirl across the dance floor to the lovely music that was playing – had a real art deco feel to the place )
And the rain just carried on ….

Day 4 Hot Stuff!!!

Posted in News at 12:43 am by Mags

Woke from the best nights sleep I’d had in ages – think the jet lag had caught up with me icon-phbbt

Rotorua is hard to describe – its sort of has a seasidey feel to it (its beside a lake) but it smells of sulphur!!! icon-smellie_oooo
It has one very long street which has lots of motels on either side with various amenities but the most common is the spa pool because this is right in the middle of a geo thermal area and there is lots of natural hot water about … full of stuff thats good for you !!! icon-oh-go-on
But there’s also alot of tradition around …
The hot pools have been in use since the Maori settled there – and the arrival of the Europeans saw it develop into a spa area. Visitors came from Europe way back in the 1800′s when the mode of transport was a horse and buggy – or walking (bet they didn’t get jet lag!!! probably took months to get here!!) mostly to see the Pink and White Terraces which were a natural phenomemon in the area and to bathe …
but it is an area of geo instability (still is!!) and of course things tend to go bang every now and again … Mount Tawawera the local volcano blew with devastating effect in 1886 destroying the Terraces forever and causing devastation over a very wide area … one place that was greatly effected was the village of Te Wairoa which was buried by 2m of volcanic material – this site has now been excavated and is known as the Buried Village which was our first visit of the day.
The village was once the home of Hinemihi the Maori meeting house now in Surrey (and the subject of the book The House with Golden Eyes written by Alan Gallop the guy who has written the book the boss is turning into his next play The Children of The Dark … small world!!! icon_surprised )
Buried Village Site

Again there was atmosphere I can’t put my finger on – I know its quieter here but some of the places we’ve been to have had a very spiritual quality to them too …
It was quite unnerving standing in the excavated huts and seeing how the volcanic material had just pushed its way in …
Mother Nature is quite something when she’s riled icon_po
From here we headed back to Rotorua via the Blue and Green Lakes – two lakes right next to each other but two different colours – something to do with the material at the bottom of them – but there’s also a Maori legend about a princess dropping a pice of jewellry in one which changed the colour (think I got that right!)

Back in Rotorua we follwed in the footsteps of George Bernard Shaw to Hell’s Gate!!!
up til then I was a little disappointed in the lush green landscape we were travelling through (I know no pleasing some!! icon-frustrated) – I was expecting huge volcanic wastelands with geysers and mud pools every two feet … icon-angry021 – but the plants and trees round here are very determined …
At Hell’s Gate I got just what I’d asked for though … ploppling bubbling mud, steam, water spurting, barren landscape …
It was so hot it was cool! icon-saycool
Hells Gate
And of course we had the mud bath and spa experience icon_biggrin
(we both now have skin to die for icon_mrgreen )
After dining on fish and chips from NZ’s no 1 Chippie icon-hungry we retired as I could barely keep my eyes open … well til Dean Bell popped up in the half time of the Auckland Warriors game we found on TV !!!! Me and Deano in Auckland together now that would be a rumour to start …. icon_lol
I realise that this will be lost on a few of you – but if I say Rugby League and Wigan Warriors you’ll understand some of my excitement!!! icon-biggrin
Murray said he’d never seen someone jump back to life so quickly icon-laughing but I didn’t last the whole game !!!! icon-sleepy

Day 3 Glowing …

Posted in News at 11:46 pm by Mags

Set off very early (about 6.45 a.m) icon_eek to head for Rotorua and the geothermal regions !!!!
We stopped off first at the Waitomo caves – famous for all the glow worms hanging from the ceiling !

We arrived at just the right time as there was a coach load of Japanese tourists who pulled up behind us who were having the tour in Japanese – so Murray and I got our own guide to our selves!! icon-whew he was called Mark and was really good …
The caves were something else – the limestone was white not the sludgey grey we have at home … and the stalactites hung like icicles … icon_lookaround
One of the main features of these caves is a cavern called The Cathedral – the acoustics in here are world reknowned – infact Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has sung there and commented on the purity of the sound – and I have to agree with her icon_lol – well if its good enough for Kiri to belt out a tune its good enough for me icon_wink
Apparently they do Christmas Carol concerts in there which would be quite something to be part of …

You then get a boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto which was surreal – lots of little tiny blue lights in the ceiling and total silence icon-dont-tell
apparently the local Maori tribe wouldn’t go near the place for years because of the atmosphere and you could understand it it was quite other worldly – only the chefs knew about what was in there …

Sadly you can’t take pictures in there – but you do get your pic taken as the boat re-emerges – we look very ‘touristy’ on it icon_hehe
the site Waitomo Caves might give you a taster though ….

From here we drove down the road to the Arauni Cave – where you can take pics …
Here some of the formations had names like the ‘Two Old Maori Women’ – which were two large formations which were brownish in colour and from an angle did look like two old women in shawls hunched over – when we got up close to it Murray said it looked like chocolate rice pudding icon-doh-uhg .
The rock in the caves looked like melted candle wax – in fact the ceiling in some places made me think of candle making with lots of taper candles hanging down … all very beautiful… icon_thumbsup

From here we headed for Rotorua which was to be our base for the next couple of days …
Lovely motel room (with private spa pool ! icon-cool14)

The first port of call was the Rainbow Springs Nature Park (on Fairy Springs Rd – lovely names pixie )
Rainbow Springs
It was going dark when we got there (and it goes very dark here!) so the walk was even more atmospheric – lots of Rainbow Trout in the stream – huge things !
But the highlight here was getting up close and personal with a Kiwi – and I don’t mean Murray!!!! icon-cupid1
They have a special area set aside where Kiwi eggs are incubated and hatched and the Kiwi are then raised ready for release back to the wild – we got to see 3 of them really really close up – of course its very dark and you have to be really really quiet icon-dont-tell
We were the only 2 humans in there at the time so the Kiwi didn’t notice us at first so we got to have a good look – they are really very timid little things …

We then took the Gondola up the side of Mount Ngongotaha (an extinct volcano icon-evil2 ) for dinner – a nine course affair !!!! (well if you want it to be – but Veggies can be excused!!!!) Deserts to die for though … a gorgeous melt in your mouth berry moussey thing which if I’d seen first would have just had that!!! 9 courses of it!!!! icon-hungry and I got to try Hokey Pokey Ice Cream – which I must admit I did think M had made up icon_wink but no its real … and very very good!!! slobber – sort of like pieces of Crunchie in very vanilla ice cream …

We then hit the spa bath which knocked me out completely …. icon-sleepy

Day2 We went to the zoo… zoo.. zoo…

Posted in News at 10:33 pm by Mags

My first full day in Auckland – so we went penguin spotting – what else???? icon-saycool
Weather was nice and bright – wasn’t really convinced it was Winter icon-phbbt

The tigers seemed to have done a bunk but did manage to get very up close and personal to a wee little blue Penguin (also known as a Fairy penguin) – he was a cute little chap and I was very worried he was all by himself in the enclosure … icon-worried
I was already for offering him a cosy home in my pocket icon-goodidea when Murray pointed out he had a little friend who was in their little shelter …
so he wasn’t by himself … bless

Had my first taste of L&P which is a NZ soft drink – VVVVV nice …

Went for dinner to Murray’s Parents – they haven’t banned me yet!!!! icon-rofl

I’m here!!!!

Posted in News at 9:00 pm by Mags

Arrived safe and well icon-nzflag happiest

Flight was good icon-plane managed to keep awake to adapt to NZ time … icon_biggrin

Saw huge electrical storm as I flew across India – it was quite spectacular – as was looking down at the shape of places like Dehli – from the air looks like a huge snow flake!

Had mad dash across Singapore airport – and was give wrong gate number by the ground staff – so was mild panic icon-nonono
Just had chance to text Murray that I WAS on the Auckland plane before we took off!!!! icon-shocked

and I got to fly over Aus – which MY Premiere Tour Guide had said I wouldn’t icon-rolleyes
so I waved at all my friends down there – not sure where I was at the time as its such a B I G place but its the thought that counts … icon_hehe

Landed at Auckland slightly ahead of schedule – and they let me into the country!! icon-nzflag which I thought was very decent of them!!! icon_lol

Met by a marching band, banners, jugglers fire eaters etc ….
Ok so that was the version you’ll see in the film icon_rotfl
no was met by my Mr Wonderful lotoflove ( viewers of a sensitive disposition may want to avert their eyes!!!) icon-love-sign

and still can’t quite believe I’m here icon-lovechild

so almost 36 hours on (still haven’t come to deport me icon-dont-tell ) I’m totally on local time – even waking up at my usual slot!! icon-smellie_lol

went up to Whangerei (if its spelt wrong blame Murray he told me!!! icon-wave) yesterday to see his Nan Moff – a totally gorgeous lady of 90 who unfortunately fell the other week and broke her hip – mind you if I’m like her at 50 I’ll be chuffed … and I got to meet Mum and Dad too icon-nailbite and seeing as they haven’t dragged Murray off back home I think I’m doing ok!!! icon-whew

Have new friend too – called Buster (sorry Freddie!) took him for a walk icon-dogwalk last evening …

Today the sun is shining – not sure what we are doing yet – going with the flow … romeo

Off to Rotorua and Taupo tomorrow for thermal spas, mud pools and volcanoes … icon-saycool

time for tea Murray!!!!

icon_ciao2 4 now icon-wave
